One might argue that, by definition, just about any activity (Facebook, intramural volleyball, …) is meaningful. However, Dr. Kuh reminded us that, when it comes to enhancing student success, it is critical to focus (refocus?) on the right/high impact activities, including:

« First-Year Seminars & Experiences

« Common Intellectual Experiences

« Learning Communities

« Writing-Intensive Courses

« Collaborative Assignments & Projects

« Undergraduate Research

« Diversity/Global Learning

« Service Learning, Community-Based Learning

« Internships

« Capstone Courses & Projects

He really pushed me to think about innovative ways to get students to connect on campus and within our programming. For example, he advised us to find ways for students to provide answers to those questions we know will help us understand their state of mind. He joked about how Dr. Holland developed his comprehensive Hexagon Model for career development but then stated the best predictor is to just ask the person themselves! I think this works with students in certain environments better than others.
