National Dialog on Student Retention

EducationDynamics launched the National Dialog on Student Retention, an initiative designed to foster discussion and information gathering about the latest practices in successful student retention, in 2007. Two ways that we further the project are through an annual conference and a distinguished speaker Webinar series. Click on the various posts below to learn about upcoming events, view previous conferences sessions and Webinars, discuss student retention theories with colleagues and much more.

Webinar 12/15/2008 Retention 2.0: From Theory to Tactics

To view the recording of the student retention Webinar originally presented by EducationDynamics on December 5, 2008, you must be registered with this site, which is unrelated to the actual Webinar event, and is instead a resource offering articles, interviews with experts and much more.  Click here to go to the recording, or, if you are not registered, to sign yourself up.

The link will open in a new window.  If you need to register, then once you are logged in, return to this window and follow the link for the Webinar.

I was in the room with Dr. Kuh during this webinar and what I most liked was his honesty when discussing how challenging it is to engage students. He really pushed me to think about innovative ways to get students to connect on campus and within our programming. For example, he advised us to find ways for students to provide answers to those questions we know will help us understand their state of mind. He joked about how Dr. Holland developed his comprehensive Hexagon Model for career development but then stated the best predictor is to just ask the person themselves! I think this works with students in certain environments better than others.

College students have no shortage of school-sponsored or school-related activity choices. One might argue that, by definition, just about any activity (Facebook, intramural volleyball, …) is meaningful. However, Dr. Kuh reminded us that, when it comes to enhancing student success, it is critical to focus (refocus?) on the right/high impact activities, including:

« First-Year Seminars & Experiences

« Common Intellectual Experiences

« Learning Communities

« Writing-Intensive Courses

« Collaborative Assignments & Projects

« Undergraduate Research

« Diversity/Global Learning

« Service Learning, Community-Based Learning

« Internships

« Capstone Courses & Projects
